What’s the difference between exhausts and mufflers?

The exhaust is a system of pipes that are responsible for safely releasing gases emitted by the engine. The exhaust system begins at the cylinders where the combustion takes place and extends all the way to the rear of the vehicle where the gases are released.

A muffler is a component of the exhaust system. It’s responsible for “muffling” or reducing the noise produced by the combustion process in the engine. The key role of a muffler is to absorb the noise that is generated by the engine and then transferred down the exhaust system.
